Langcer Lee, the creative director behind this project, along with his design team, embarked on a journey to capture the essence of Easter Island's Moai stone statues. These statues, standing tall and mysterious on the remote island, have been a source of intrigue for centuries. The team's inspiration was to create a wine label that encapsulates the awe and wonder sailors might have felt upon first discovering these colossal stone figures.
The design's unique properties lie in its ability to narrate a story. The label depicts a scene of sailors pulling away grass to reveal a Moai statue, a volcano, blooming red lilies of the valley, a smart Brown deer, and vultures. Adding to the mystique, the seal is adorned with ancient documents found on Easter Island, leaving a golden space for consumers to express their feelings.
The design's realization is a testament to the team's commitment to authenticity and sustainability. The bottle is wrapped in pure natural imitation rice paper, with different colors distinguishing various grape types. The bottle is further wrapped with straw rope and decorated with pure natural bluestone, the same material used in Moai statues. This design not only adds an aesthetic appeal but also serves as a nod to the ancient civilization that inspired it.
Despite the challenges of finding pure natural bluestone in developing cities and creating unique burn marks on each bottle through real combustion, the team managed to overcome these obstacles. The result is a design that is as unique as the civilization it represents. The burn marks symbolize the lost memory of an erased civilization, while the bluestone serves as a tangible connection to the Moai statues.
The "Kerloso Wine" packaging design is a testament to the power of design in bridging the gap between the past and the present. It is a celebration of the mystery and beauty of ancient civilizations, and an invitation to consumers to partake in this journey of discovery. As Langcer Lee's design proves, sometimes, a bottle of wine is more than just a beverage; it's a portal to another time and place.
The project, which started and completed in Tianjin in 2021, is a testament to the team's creativity and dedication. The design's success is reflected in its recognition with the Golden A' Packaging Design Award, a testament to its outstanding creativity and trendsetting design. As the design continues to garner attention and accolades, it serves as a reminder of the power of design in telling stories and creating experiences.
